Comment:

 Yes I was experiencing something different, private posts weren't visible
 when logged in as the author of said posts, user also being an admin.

 I disabled all plugins - that didn't fix it. I then reverted to the
 "default" theme, and that did fix it. Behaviour was back as you described.
 Narrowed it down to something wrong with my theme, sorry for wasting your
 time thought I'd finally be able to contribute something small back to the
 wp community then but clearly not :(
