 Using r7414 I created some private posts as an admin user. I was able to
 see these posts on the blog's front page (when logged in as admin). When I
 logged out, the private posts were not visible. I logged in as a
 subscriber, but could not see the private posts. I logged in as an author
 and couldn't see them. I changed the author account to an admin and then
 was able to see the private posts.

 With tests on 2.3.3 I experienced the same behavior.

 Are you experiencing something different? Can you make sure to deactivate
 all of your plugins and try using the default theme?
