 I don't think there is any security issue if third parties know how many
 installs my plugin has.

 The data should be available to the whole WordPress community, not only to
 plugin authors.

 * customers benefit because of knowing this information, each +1 active
 install adds to the credibility of a plugin,
 * this encourages competition and market research and makes the plugins
 repo overall better.

 If there is an issue with the load of servers because of abuse, this can
 easily be fixed through rate limits and better protection.
