 Over the past few days I've noticed more and more plugins that have been
 hit by this. I think the big issue here, as people have mentioned, is that
 there didn't seem to be much of a warning that this would happen. It seems
 like a lot of developers don't even know the install section has been
 removed.

 I think removing the install tab is a good move, but some extra
 information/advice for developers seems to be needed. I've added a "How do
 I install this plugin" section to the FAQ of my plugins, but I'm lucky
 enough to have no life so can keep up with this sort of thing :p

 I also totally agree with @javorszky. If a user is not familiar with
 WordPress yet, they will have no idea how to install a plugin. They will
 click the "Download" button and have a zip that they don't know what to do
 with (most people I work with don't even know what a zip is). Even if
 there was some kind of generic splash page before downloading, that would
 be a vast improvement for the average user.
