I still think your Support URI idea is a really strong one, even if you
changed your mind.

1. It's completely optional like a lot of the theme meta info anyways.

2. It's only helpful, there are no cons whatsoever.

The reason it basically was a "No" is because it was subjectively overruled
and the consensus was basically "We don't want to do that." I never heard
any valid cons if any were even presented (can't remember), and saw a lot
of pros.
