[wp-hackers] file upload: why actual files?

At my office, we work with BLOB files all the time, and they are an enormous 
strain on a database. Corporately we have now moved to SDL as the database 
engine of choice for handling these files. I heard that an SDL license was 
around $60 000USD. Ouch.

I have already had one of my sites blocked by a web host because it was alleged 
to have brought down their might server. I guess all 250MB of bandwidth I used 
that month was quite a strain.

Anything that is done that consumes server resources is going to be closely 
watched by web hosts.
