Actually, it's sdout to crond, and that's handled via a mail to the user
running the cron. At least on my boxen, Gentoo fcron & OpenBSD. 

(The output was done that way on purpose so the error would be reported
to cron, and you'd know that the whole build failed via email, with
sendmail doing the time/date stamping for you :)
