Comment:

 I've updated the latest PR to clean up some places where the newly
 introduced globals are now unnecessary. @jorbin I'll work on some unit
 tests that demonstrate the problem, but it's a bit difficult to reproduce
 in a test.

 In the mean time, for anyone who is struggling with this issue, I've put
 together a quick plugin that you can install that should help.
