 Thanks, @nickpagz, I very much appreciate it. Agreed this is only a
 partial workaround, it's still very important to get native support in
 WordPress to be able to manage thumbnails and such.

 For anyone else following this thread, there are a few ways to use a
 workaround like this to upload AVIF images to the media library, here's a
