Adding the following to functions.php makes those objections moot:

add_action('init','my_init');
function my_init() {
add_post_type_support( 'page', 'excerpt' );
register_taxonomy_for_object_type( 'category', 'page' );
register_taxonomy_for_object_type( 'post_tag', 'page' );
}
