 Hi all, since this ticket hasn't been touched in over 6 years, and with
 the extra context that @chriscct7 provided about the lack of performance
 impact, I'm going to close this ticket to help clean up the backlog in
 Trac.

 Feel free to reopen if you have modern benchmarks proving this is
 worthwhile.
