Comment:

 Reopening as per the comments above. I like the idea of moving to a white
 background but it needs to be done in conjunction with other changes that
 allow visual hierarchy, separation, and contrast to be retained. I would
 also say that just because the block and site editors use white everywhere
 doesn't mean it's the best solution, they also suffer from a lack of
 visual hierarchy when the theme uses a white background.

 Experimenting is good. This experiment has told us that a more thorough
 approach is needed.
