As a user of WordPress on sites with >20 pages I frequently have to comb
through multiple pages of the page list to find the front page. If you
search "front page" it does not find the front page. The fastest way to
find it ends up being to log in and go to the home page and hit edit post,
while using the pages page is not fast unless its a very small site.

Since that is the main and landing page of the website it should be listed
first in the page list as a default, so it's always easy to find.

https://core.trac.wordpress.org/ticket/39666 is still open and is asking
for the front page to be made into a sticky/pinned item above the page
list (I think) --- that seems overly complex and could add some confusion
to the user experience (as noted in the comments if someone selects
display 2 and then there are more than 2 displayed). It could simply just
be listed first in the regular page list (no sticky) so it's easy to find.
 :)

If WP wants to be more complicated about this there could be more options
on the top of the page for how pages are listed i.e. front page first, top
level menu pages first, pages with X criteria first etc etc. If WP is
rolling with the pinned post ideas, users should probably be able to
customize what posts are pinned in that case.

But initially having the front page just be listed first would make
editing the home page less tedious.
