 I've done an extensive code review of the patch proposed by
 @SergeyBiryukov and have added a few small tweaks to it.

 In my opinion, the patch as it is now (after okay on the tweaks by
 @SergeyBiryukov), can go in today, providing we open a couple of follow-up
 tickets to be addressed later (tests, refactor of caching).

 Better it go in now to benefit from the full beta period for testing, then
 going in late and issues not being found before the final release.
