Comment:

 Coming back to this, I think we are going to need some tests that will
 show that this returns the data in the format that is expected so adding
 the `needs-unit-tests` tag.

 Also, cc @dmsnell based on some conversations during WordCamp US
 contributor day. Would be interested in hearing your thoughts on this
 approach.
