Comment:

 Given the age of this ticket and lack of traction since it was opened, I
 wanted to check if this enhancement is still desirable at this time.

 I'll mark with `close` for now to signal future closure (`maybelater`
 perhaps). However, if there is renewed interest in making these functions
 reusable outside `wp-login.php`, a refreshed patch is absolutely welcome!
