 @ramon-fincken Thanks for having a look and sorry if my instructions for
 reproduction weren't clear. What was missing to reproduce this was trying
 to save the defaults via the REST API: https://developer.wordpress.org
 /rest-api/reference/posts/#schema-meta

 I just took the time to create a PR including a test. I am still not 100%
 sure this fully covers the whole issue but maybe you can test the PR and
 it is more clear now what the issue is.
