 I'm curious if this was an issue with a bare bones install with no extra
 plugins installed and the default theme being the active theme.

 If there were plugins and other things running, they could have been
 affecting the output of the feed(s), causing the errors. If that's the
 case, then it'd be more an issue to take up with the plugin causing it,
 than something to do with the core feed generating.
