Comment:

 I am not able to reproduce this on MacOS 14.2.1 and Safari 17.2.1.
 - My system settings are set to the dark appearance, and the theme
 displays the correct dark background by default.
 - I also confirmed that there was no previous local storage saved for the
 dark mode.
