Ah, I see. Seems we share pretty much the same opinion, thanks for
clearing this!

Yea, you're right this feels harsh. However decisions like this would make
everybody's life easier in the future as WP strives to maintain maximum
backwards compatibility. By "everybody" I mean WP contributors,
committers, and users.
Frankly I wish there were more "harsh" decisions like that in the past.
Would have prevented many security vulnerabilities and made it easier to
maintain certain features and components (for example shortcodes).
