 I agree with your assessment that the singular word version should be
 used.

 Google Trends] shows "website" has been the preferred term for some time.
 Filtering make.wordpress.org for these terms shows a similar preference
 ([https://www.google.com/search?q=site%3Amake.wordpress.org+%22website%22
 "website"] vs
 [https://www.google.com/search?q=site%3Amake.wordpress.org+%22web+site%22
 "web site"]). I've left a review on your PR to help move this forward.
