 Same here, the plan outlined in comment:26 sounds great to me.

 I agree, the PR on #57375 looks good to me. That said, I believe we
 generally only introduce new core functions once they are actually used in
 core, so perhaps it can be committed as soon as the approach here is
 finalized.
