 I think the option 3 PR looks good for 6.1.2 as of
 0fb848b453ded2530c44b022c9da2705e1e94a43

 @flixos90 My inclination it to revert the regression. As you say, the
 solution may be elsewhere so it would be good for those of us working on
 the ticket (Jonny and I most likely) to sort out a few ideas beforehand.
