Comment:

 WordPress core relies on underlying PHP language for Date/Time support and
 calculations. So the supported calendar and features are directly
 equivalent. I do not think any other calendars are being considered for
 extra implementation in WordPress core itself (though they could be added
 with plugins).

 I am not familiar with the nature of implementation in theme directory.

 I would recommend to look for an existing plugin for such.
