 Sure, feel free to start. Then @barryhughes, I, other contributors can
 review and/or expand as needed. There are several functions that should be
 used, like for example when altering the tables. Also several functions
 would have to be updated, and couple more added (see above about using
 JSON). I'd imagine the new wrappers would follow similar code/solution
 from elsewhere in WP.
