 Per slack conversation:

 `Before version 5.6, someone had to do manual updates to plugins, themes,
 and major versions of Core. As of version 5.6 and to this day, all those
 updates can happen automatically, if you choose. All you do is click an
 action link on the appropriate page in the WordPress Admin.`
