 mentioned in Slack], I think it's best if these changes are reverted as my
 continued experience is that they are making updates more likely to fail.

 Given this, I've come to the conclusion that the following commits need to
 be reverted and the reliability improvements added in a subsequent
 release:

 either a verification or amendment to this list **

 As there is only one chance to get updater fixes right, I'd like to see
 this reworked and tested for the next major rather than risk breaking the
 feature.
