Comment:

 It's currently looking like a full customizer refactor is unlikely to
 happen. Initial block support in widgets is coming in 5.8, integrating
 with the current customize infrastructure. A potential catalyst for this
 change could be an implementation of template editing or global (block)
 styles into the customizer. Those features are probably more likely to
 stay separate; a detailed proposal of options lives here:
 https://github.com/WordPress/gutenberg/issues/30496

 For now, I suggest closing this issue as `maybelater`.
