Comment:

 Switching component back to menus because this does apply to both menu
 management interfaces.

 The long-term direction is to replace menus with blocks (as noted in
 [comment:90]). The approach there offers more flexibility at a user level,
 although it may actually be more difficult for plugins to extend in the
 way that this ticket discusses. That work is happening in the Gutenberg
 plugin. In the meantime, a single hook was added in [47190] to address the
 most common need for extensibility in the current menus system.

 Therefore, this ticket could probably be closed when (and if) the current
 menu management interfaces are replaced with blocks. That has been
 proposed and in process potentially for 5.8 in wp-admin but not yet
 started for the customizer.
