 I think it makes sense to check for the existence of values specific to
 this update and make the change conditional on their existence. If any
 plug-in is overriding the data, then I think we should assume that plug-in
 is taking full responsibility for how that data is fetched and displayed.

 That makes a lot of sense to me, at least.
