 Thanks for the feedback, I can sense the resistance here to #2 which
 admittedly is a much bigger change.

 I am definitely open to that approach, especially with a plan to move
 towards WebP as the default in the next release. Although I do feel we are
 ready for WebP, and our users would have the biggest benefit from #2, I
 understand the need to move slowly and deliberately here.

 We can at least consider them separately. I will split the code up and
 change this patch so it includes only the 1 & 3 changes, then open a
 follow up ticket for #2.
