Thank you for working on this.
In my opinion one of the most important tasks for refreshing the admin
color schemes, outside of moving to CSS variables, is to reduce the total
number of colors in use. Instead of having 30 different shades of gray,
less than ten is vastly preferable simply because it forces just a little
bit of consistency and systematization across the interface. I hope and
believe this cleanup will be a first of many that help streamline the
interface.
I would also echo audrasjb above, those before and after screenshots are
really helpful.

I'm not personally afraid of design changes, but I do think they're best
made in a more holistic way. Just on its own, this change of gray is very
visible, and while we're no-where near AA contrast levels, the relative
shift in contrast still puts it in that space where it's so light, it
might as well just be white.
I may have answered my own question, that it's a result of a reduction in
grays. And my objection is not a strong one at all. It just seems like a
tiny step backwards.
