 Thank you all for your excellent feedback.

 FYI I tried @peterwilsoncc's suggestion in wp-config.php and I still get
 the same fatal error in php 8.0. As he said, "...the first WordPress call
 to error_reporting() occurs before wp-config.php is loaded..."
