 Note: This patch adds support for the following characters: `.`, `[`, `]`,
 `(`, `)`, `_`, and `@`. It does not add support for `|` (which fail on
 Windows), `+` (which gets stripped), or `=` (which is a separator for
 query string key=value pairs).
