 +1. Well maintained live sites should not update ANYTHING automatically,
 except minor WP releases and emergency (security) fixes.

 Specifically for plugin messages, it's tough to control, but once the
 official stance is changed and announced, it's more likely to be adopted.
 Using the above example, I can't imagine the MonsterInsights team not
 paying attention to Core Team suggestions.
