 I would really like to see this land in core as well.

 This is such a basic but quite common sense requirement. It would make
 transforming individual sites into a multisite or the other way around as
 well a lot easier.

 The 9 year old code still works. Mainly because WordPress actually allows
 defining CUSTOM_USER_TABLE and CUSTOM_USER_META_TABLE. If there were some
 more filter and actions hooks within the $wpdb class there would
 potentially be a less "ugly" hack then what was proposed by
 @lightningspirit – but so be it.

 But I am having the same issue that others have raised that it's
 impossible to create new User Accounts from within the Sub Sites. Only on
 the main site (or via the database directly). I will see if I can find a
 way around that and will keep this issue updated if so.
