 It's not quite clear why this used to work in 5.4.2 but not in 5.5 though,
 would be great to figure out what exactly is causing the fatal error and
 maybe display a more appropriate message if possible.

 comment:9 aims to track down the relevant changes, needs more
 investigation though.
