 It's not switching it back, no decision has been made. In fact, before an
 if this should happen decision is made, a decision on what we want to do
 is needed.

 latter is admittedly more difficult since WP currently serves files
 directly from the filesystem, rather than hitting any code where this
 logic could run before serving an image, so it may be a nonstarter to
 pursue something like this for core.

 I think the picture based solution is much better, but sadly it still
 means IE is left out, so it doesn't give us much more adoption. To me,
 running WP on every image request is a non-starter. That's going to beat
 up a lot of servers.
