 Indeed, until WordPress has index.php files in the folders of the core
 package, index.html is a safe choice.

 I can't imagine any host not having .html enabled, but there might be some
 that don't have .htm enabled. (And if you're using WordPress, they
 obviously have .php enabled).

 Knowing the priority on the server - your host can easily tell you the
 priority order of index file extensions on your server, just ask them.
