 Excited to get this in! Thanks @andraganescu and @georgestephanis for
 working on it.

 I tested the linked PR and left some comments inline there. There's a bug
 when an incorrect username or password is specified, and I'd like a REST
 API component maintainer to chime in with whether or not this code should
 be moved out of `rest_api_loaded` into e.g. its own function.
