 @johnjamesjacoby what do you think about adding a new parameter onto
 `get_metadata` that would get the unfiltered value? Otherwise we're
 needing to unhook and rehook filters like in
 https://core.trac.wordpress.org/attachment/ticket/43941/43941.9.diff
