Comment:

I'd really like to see this in core too. Many clients I work with find it
confusing that they can't change their user profile image without signing
up to an external service, and clients in some countries such as Germany
just flat out refuse to use Gravatar due to privacy and data protection
 considerations.

Gravatar certainly has its use, and I very much enjoy not having to re-
upload an avatar image on every other web service I use, but there's
really no reason for core to rely ''solely'' on Gravatar and not provide
 local avatar image functionality.

The patches on this ticket are quite old and there are many plugins that
provide user avatar functionality that allows a local avatar to override a
Gravatar, with the latter remaining the default for backwards
compatibility. Is anyone willing to start listing some high quality
plugins that could be a good basis for inclusion in core?

Ideally the avatar image control would make use of the image cropping
controls that are available in the media manager (as used by the favicon,
 site icon, etc).
