Comment:

 I like the patch from @desrosj and am +1 on it's inclusion as it will help
 ease the transition.

 Like others have said, we need to rip the bandaid. Developers have had
 years to fix these incompatibilities, and over a month since the
 announcement was made that WordPress 5.5 would include this update.
