 Can you describe the problem that's resulting in a backwards compatibility
 issue? I don't clearly see what the problem is; if it's just the fact that
 drop areas are unexpectedly visible, I think there should be a solution
 that's short of reverting everything. But looking at what you've written
 above, I'm not at all clear what the issue is.
