Comment:

 @desrosj concerning version control system check, I'd suggest to address
 that concern in another ticket, to keep this one focused on its main goal.

 Maybe I'm wrong, but looking at #41078 (which was previously closed as
 `maybelater`), it looks like the concern you raised is not limited to the
 auto update feature, but also to themes and plugin editions, etc.

 (Not related: I forgot to move this ticket to 5.4, so now it's in the
 milestone)
