 One last thought for now. When auto-updates are attempted, it checks if
 the [https://core.trac.wordpress.org/browser/trunk/src/wp-admin/includes
 /class-wp-automatic-updater.php#L74.WordPress install appears to be under
 version control].

 If this function returns `true`, no auto-updates are ever applied. I think
 in the scenario where a WordPress install appears to be under version
 control, the user should not be able to enable auto-updates for plugins
 and themes. I am also thinking the UI elements should be hidden to prevent
 potential confusion.
