Comment:
As developer of Complianz GDPR I would welcome this enhancement: a core
API where cookie plugins can set the current consent level, and plugins
can retrieve the consent level. Because there can be discussion about the
needed categories, and in combination with for example Tag Manager there
can be custom categories, I think there would have to be only three base
categories, functional, statistics, marketing, which can be extended with
a filter.
Because it's not possible to prevent other plugins from placing marketing
cookies using PHP, this feature could improve compliancy on sites.
Additionally, if a plugin places tracking cookies in a javascript file
that also performs other functions, the only way to block this cookie
currently is to block the entire script, which might break things. If a
plugin can check for the WP core consent status, this would be great.
Because the GDPR requires the user to explicitly consent to placement of
marketing cookies, and depending on the setup, statistical cookies,
there's no question about the usefulness of such a feature in my opinion.
