 Thank you for committing that, @SergeyBiryukov!

 To close the loop (given that I originally reverted this change), I'm 💯
 in favour of it landing now. @jrf did an excellent job of showing that the
 back compat risks are minimal: it will only cause a PHP warning, there's
 no functional breakage. It also likely affects a very small number of
 sites.
