Comment (by CodeBard):
I very much think that notifications should not be pushed to a Facebook
like dropdown or a separate page as shown in some examples. This would
practically render them near invisible for all but the most enthusiastic
users.
As far as i see, users dont go around a site and go about 'I wonder what
exciting notifications i have" and click out of their way to see
notifications - neither in WP ecosystem or outside.
As a user myself, in Facebook etc i expect what i would like to see to
''**appear**'' in my feed. I dont go about clicking the notifications icon
and then go through dozens of notifications as if its a task i need to do.
I know there are a lot of social media enthusiasts who do exactly that,
but it is unlikely to be the norm.
Getting people's attention is hard. Everybody is increasingly busy in our
modern times. Even with the current notification system, it takes a lot of
repetitive nagging to have people even upgrade their plugins which you
supply from your private repo (premium etc). For plugins at WP repo, you
cant even do that.
There must be a way to bring notifications to the sight of the user or
admin just like now, but they should be presented in a more manageable and
neat manner. They definitely should not be out of the way like a
notification bar where you have to click that dropdown or hover on
something to see any notifications.
Push notification like functionality as some proposed is not bad actually.
Its commonly accepted across most of the web, and users are used to it. It
seems to work pretty fine as well.
