Comment:

 In the long term, we're going to be moving away from widgets and towards
 blocks.

 There's an issue and some open PRs around adding featured image support to
 the Latest Posts block
 (https://github.com/WordPress/gutenberg/issues/1594) — let's focus on
 getting those in. Going to close as "wontfix," but folks are free to
 reopen if they want to push this forward regardless and are willing to own
 the issue.
